1970 marked the birth of Tudor’s chronograph world—an homage to the spirit of the Rolex Daytona.
The first Tudor chronographs, Ref. 7031/0 and 7032/0, were introduced with the Valjoux Cal. 7734. In 1972, Tudor transitioned into its second generation, adopting the Valjoux Cal. 234 and unveiling models inspired by the Daytona 6263 and 6265: Ref. 7149, Ref. 7159, and the rotating-bezel Ref. 7169.

By 1976, with the arrival of the automatic Valjoux Cal. 7750, Tudor entered a new era. Featuring a 12-hour totalizer and, for the first time, the dial signature “CHRONO-TIME,” the lineup expanded to include Ref. 9420 with a bakelite bezel, Ref. 9421 with a rotating bezel, and Ref. 9430 with a fixed bezel. This evolution culminated in the final early-generation Chrono-Time references—Ref. 94200, 94210, and 94300—marking the end of an era as Valjoux transitioned into ETA SA under the ébauche system.

The present piece represents the fourth generation of Tudor chronographs and, notably, the first “Chrono-Time” model. It stands as the final storyteller of Tudor’s formative 1970s chronograph era. Among them, the most sought-after is the rotating-bezel Ref. 94210—particularly this rare black-based Monte Carlo dial.

From the first Chrono-Time to this fourth model, the dial design differs significantly from standard versions. True to its name, “Monte Carlo,” the dial evokes the imagery of racing dashboards and the glamour of the Monaco Grand Prix, while also recalling the roulette wheels of the Casino de Monte-Carlo. Various naming stories exist, yet all point toward a more refined and aristocratic identity embodied in the name Monte Carlo itself.

However, Tudor Chrono-Time models are also known for the high number of counterfeits in the market. This is one reason why even highly valued examples rarely appear in major international auctions—they are, without question, among the most difficult pieces to authenticate.

At our company, we place strong emphasis on serial number consistency, and authentication through Rolex verification is also possible. Here are a few key visual distinctions:

The luminous dot at the top of each hour marker must be perfectly centered—misalignment indicates a counterfeit.
The “AUTOMATIC-CHRONOTIME” text at 6 o’clock should closely touch the sub-dial; separation is a red flag.
Hands feature a recessed center with lume applied to approximately the upper three-quarters; overly long lume is typical of fakes.
Numerals are refined and elegant, using rounded numerals with slightly swollen terminals—never thick or crude.

Even so, visual inspection alone is often insufficient. For a model of this level, authentication by Rolex remains essential.
