This is the first model to feature a waterproof case developed by Rolex.

In 1927, a British swimmer named Mercedes Gleitze attempted to swim across the English Channel. Hans Wilsdorf, the founder of Rolex and a brilliant marketing strategist, saw this as a perfect opportunity. He provided her with a prototype featuring the brand’s newly developed waterproof Oyster case.

Remarkably, the watch endured over 10 hours of submersion and continued to function flawlessly throughout the swim. Gleitze successfully completed the crossing, and the event was widely covered by major British newspapers. This bold marketing move greatly enhanced Rolex’s reputation for reliability and innovation.
